Jonathan Reid is Professor of Physical Chemistry in the School of Chemistry at the University of Bristol and the Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Aerosol Science. Jonathan has extensive experience in developing novel single particle techniques to study microphysical aerosol processes and applying these tools to understand aerosol processes relevant to atmospheric science, drug delivery to the lungs, formulation science and disease transmission. He is the current Editor-in-Chief of the American Association of Aerosol Research (AAAR) journal, Aerosol Science and Technology. He received the Sinclair Award from the AAAR in 2025 and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2026.
To study the airborne transmission of disease requires multidisicplinary teams of researchers from infectious disease experts to engineers, virologists and microbiologists, chemists and aerosol scientists. Our understanding has advanced considerably since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic but there is still much we do not know or understand. This talk will review our state of knowledge and highlight areas where research is still required.
