EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Aerosol Science

The UK and Ireland Aerosol Society is pleased to provide its student members access to training materials associated with the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Aerosol Science.

What is the EPSRC CDT in Aerosol Science?

The EPSRC CDT in Aerosol Science is a multi-institutional PhD training programme. Led from the University of Bristol, the CDT includes academics from nine institutions across the UK. CDT academics deliver training for a new cohort of PhD students each year in all areas of aerosol science, including drug delivery to the lungs, materials science, disease transmission, environmental science, and metrology.

The CDT is a collaboration among over 80 academics across nine universities who supervise PhD cohorts and who developed and deliver the training elements. The universities involved are: University of Bath, University of Birmingham, University of Bristol, University of Cambridge, University of Hertfordshire, Imperial College London, University of Leeds, University of Manchester, and University of Surrey. The CDT brings together leading academic teams across a range of schools and faculties at these UK universities along with industrial and public-sector partners in areas including healthcare, materials science, energy and transport, environment, consumer products, and agrochemicals.

What resources are available and how are they organised?

The CDT resources provide training in the underlying physical science governing the properties and transformations of aerosols. These materials are accessible to many CDT industrial partners as well as to students around the world through special agreements.

For the UK and Ireland Aerosol Society, the CDT have made available the pre-class materials for all 14 Core Aerosol Science topics. These materials comprise over 50 hours of mini lectures, extensive multiple choice problem sets to test learning, and detailed reading lists.

Core Aerosol Science topics include:

  • Size distributions, shape, and concentrations
  • Deposition, filtration, and sampling
  • Aerosol measurement: Size, concentration, shape, mass
  • Electrical properties
  • Aerosol phase and thermodynamics
  • Optical properties of aerosol
  • Introduction to biological aerosol
  • Nucleation and new particle formation
  • Aerosol evaporation and condensation
  • Aerosol particle sources and aerosol routes to materials synthesis
  • Inhaled aerosols and health
  • Chemical reactions, and analysis of composition, phase, volatility
  • Drug delivery to the lungs
  • Aerosol transport and dynamics

How can I gain access to the materials?

The UK and Ireland Aerosol Society is pleased to provide access to these CDT training materials to PhD students studying aerosol science at UK and Irish institutions. To request access:

  • You must be studying for a PhD at a UK or Irish institution and have a valid institutional email address (e.g. email@institution.ac.uk or email@institution.ie).
  • You must be a student member of the UK and Ireland Aerosol Society.
  • Your PhD project must be related to aerosol science.
  • You must not already be affiliated with the CDT through your PhD supervisor (i.e. your supervisor is not a CDT academic).

To request access to CDT training materials through the Aerosol Society, you should complete the online webform. Once registered, your information will be forwarded to the CDT administrator. You can then expect registration information to be sent to you within 10 business days from the CDT mailbox (aerosol-science@bristol.ac.uk).

Once approved, you can access the training materials through the CDT e-portal for a duration of two years. An introduction to the e-portal and how to use the resources is described in this video.

Should you wish to access the training resources for free outside the UK and Ireland Aerosol Society route, we offer your supervisor an opportunity to apply to the CDT in Aerosol Science to become part of the academic team. A description of the role is available on the CDT website. Supervisors who are not part of the 9 CDT institutions can only apply for an "associate academic" or an "academic collaborator" role. Your supervisor would need to complete this form, which will be reviewed by the CDT Management Board at our annual meetings in September. For any queries, please contact aerosol-science@bristol.ac.uk.
