Online Classification of Soot Aggregate Aerosols by Morphology

A tandem aerosol classifier system, consisting of an Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier (AAC) and a Different Mobility Analyzer (DMA) in series, is demonstrated to produce an aerosol source with a narrow range of particle morphologies using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).  This classified particle source is monodisperse in particle mass, aerodynamic diameter, and mobility diameter.  Therefore, this approach could replace the upstream classifier in current tandem classifier methodologies, improving the characterization of non-spherical particles, including their hygroscopic, coating, volatile and charging properties.
