After reading Medical Sciences at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, he qualified at University College Hospital London. He trained in Clinical Pharmacology and Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School with Professors Colin Dollery, Neil Pride and Mike Hughes. He became Clinical Head of Respiratory Medicine at Hammersmith with clinical interests in asthma, COPD, cough, lung vasculitis and post stem cell transplant lung disease.
He led a small group conducting academic clinical research in airways disease with particular interests in beta receptors, mast cells, airway responsiveness, induced sputum and lung PET. He has published over 100 original papers in addition to reviews, invited editorials and chapters. He has taken part, and been Lead Investigator, in a number of Pharma sponsored clinical trials in Asthma and COPD. He has recently retired from the NHS. He remains a member of the Respiratory & Allergy Medicines Expert Advisory Group of the Commission on Human Medicines. He has recently acquired an academic interest in the effects of marijuana on the airways.
