Extractive Electrospray Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (EESI-MS): An online technique for the molecular characterisation of organic aerosol

Peter Gallimore and Markus Kalberer

Extractive Electrospray Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (EESI-MS) is a promising online technique for measuring the chemical composition of organic aerosol. It ionises samples using a “soft” mechanism which minimises fragmentation of unstable compounds and so is particularly suitable for studying the complex composition of aerosols. It offers the opportunity to study the mechanisms and rates of reactions taking place in the particle phase.
