The purpose of this study was to 1) evaluate the safety of nanoparticles engineered for biomedical applications and 2) investigate a possible correlation between particle surface properties and pulmonary toxicity. To this end, nanoparticles made from biocompatible polymers or lipids were tested in vivo for their ability to elicit an inflammatory response in the lung.
