Yield-Stress Drops

G. German and V. Bertola

The phenomenon of liquid drops impacting on solid surfaces is not only of interest because of the complexities involved in two phase flow behaviour: it is also an integral component of many applications, including the delivery of agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals, spray coating and painting, ink-jet printing, and fire suffocation or extinguishment. The aim in each of these applications is to optimise the drop impact dynamics, for example, by maximising the wetted surface area of the impacting drops whilst preventing rebound or splashing, thereby minimising the amount of working fluid required.
