The impact of initial meteorological conditions on the importance of aerosol-meteorological feedbacks in Beijing haze

Beijing suffers from extremely poor air quality, particularly in winter where PM2.5 concentrations frequently reach higher than 300 μg/m3 . Although policy interventions have reduced emissions and caused a decrease in average annual concentrations, heavy ‘haze’ periods, characterised by high concentrations of PM2.5 and a reduction in visibility are still a common occurrence and a major health concern.
