New insights into the ice nucleating abilities of alkali feldspars

We show that specific sites, related to alkali feldspar microtexture, are responsible for their enhanced ice nucleation ability compared to other feldspars. By using thin sections, we are able to locate the nucleation region across a large flat surface of feldspar. We show that nucleation occurs in the feldspar micropores, which are located along the boundaries between sodium rich and potassium rich regions.
