Pharmaceutical Formulation Science is concerned with the transformation of a pharmaceutically active ingredient (API) (or drug) into a medicine. The latter, when developed, should exist in a form which the patient can take easily, with minimum personal involvement or impact upon their life style. In order to achieve this goal some dosage forms may contain various ‘pharmaceutically inactive’ ingredients (or excipients) which are included to stabilise, preserve and control release of the API from the medicine in a suitable state and at a suitable rate so that the desired therapeutic action is obtained. Such excipients, particularly in controlled-release tablet formulations can easily number 10-15, which can lead to complex physicochemical interactions and impact upon the effectiveness of the dosage form.
