Aerosol Charge Analysis of High Performance Separation Systems

This work explores the measurement of electrostatic charge in fine aerosol emissions. Charge distribution measurements have been carried out using an Aerodynamic Aerosol Classifier (Cambustion) coupled with a Condensation Particle Counter (TSI) and Electrometer (Palas). This has provided measurements of charge and size distribution of different test dust materials in an aerosolised state in order to understand particle properties resulting from aerosolisation and interactions within a separation system. Tests on raw powders show clear differences in charge distribution despite similar size distributions between different test powders (silica and dolomite minerals). These measurements can be applied to and inform the modelling and development of cyclone separators and filters as well as support experimental tests with additional control of the challenge aerosols.
